City Hall Sculpture Garden

The City Hall Sculpture Garden will be the first permanent art garden in the City of Milwaukie! This exciting project will be constructed in May-June of 2010 in conjunction with the re-design of Jackson Street.

In the Spring of 2009 the City of Milwaukie applied for Federal stimulus funds to expand an already planned bus shelter project along Jackson Street in downtown Milwaukie adjacent to City Hall. This project consolidates the Milwaukie Transit Center and moves most of the bus layovers on 21st Street onto Jackson and upgrades Jackson Street with an entire new streetscape-including new landscaping, sidewalks, and bulb-outs.

The artMOB and Community Services staff proposed the installation of a sculpture garden along Jackson Street in the City Hall lawn which would promote public art in Milwaukie and help reduce the loitering that occurs on the City Hall property due to the proximity to bus shelters at the Milwaukie transit center.

In order to assist with the funding of this proposal, the Community Services staff applied for and was awarded an $18,000 grant for the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Commission toward the design and installation of sculpture pedestals along Jackson Street.

The project will convert the south lawn of City Hall along Jackson Street into a landscaped sculpture garden-installing 6 permanent sculpture pedestals. The intent is to create a rotating sculpture collection in which half of the sculptures are new every year.

The sculpture garden will be constructed in May-June of 2010 and a grand opening will be scheduled in conjunction with the opening of the Jackson Street project in the fall of 2010. A call for sculpture proposals will go out in the winter of 2010. Stay tuned for more updates!
