In 2007 library volunteer Tom Hogan asked the City to host a poetry series that would invite Oregon poets to read and discuss their work with the community. Goals were to identify Milwaukie as a cultural/artistic destination, to promote and enhance the City's library, and to identify Milwaukie as a unique and innovative City. The caliber of poets that have participated has been extraordinary as well as the community's response. In two seasons the series has hosted eighteen poets, including Oregon's Poet Laureate, and capacity audiences. The series has earned a permanent place in Milwaukie, with poets and audiences welcoming the third season beginning this fall.
A committee of three community members, one City Councilor, and three City staff schedule poets, prepare the venue, and promote the series. Financial support comes from the City and grants from the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition and the Oregon Humanities for the Arts. The series' success has spawned innovative programs that have increased awareness of and interest in poetry, including two poetry workshops led by accomplished poets, an open mic event for young poets, two summer poetry picnics, and two youth workshops at Milwaukie High School. This year Milwaukie's Mayor will help launch the Authors Quarterly, a new series introducing great authors to great audiences.
